For a very long time indeed, in fact since as a teen and watching BBC News, Andy has been a fan of Sealand.
The Principality of Sealand is a self-proclaimed micronation located on HM Fort Roughs, an offshore platform in the North Sea. Situated approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles) off the coast of Suffolk, England, Sealand occupies a former Maunsell Sea Fort constructed by the British during World War II to defend shipping lanes against German forces.
In 1967, Paddy Roy Bates, a former British Army major and pirate radio broadcaster, seized control of the decommissioned fort and declared it an independent sovereign state, naming it the Principality of Sealand. Bates styled himself as Prince Roy, and his wife, Joan, as Princess Joan. The Bates family has maintained their claim to sovereignty over Sealand since that time.
Sealand has its own flag, national anthem, currency, and passports, though it is not officially recognized by any established sovereign nation. The platform itself is quite small, measuring approximately 0.004 square kilometers (4,000 square meters). As of August 2024, Sealand has only one permanent resident.
And so it came to pass that Andrew has joined the many who support the joy in freedom, the anarchic, the far from bland independent thought and actions that Sealand represents and he has been bestowed the title of Lord by Prince Michael of Sealand. From this day hence, Andy will be known as Lord Andrew John Lamb. Andrew will be notifying the authorities of his change in status.
